By Anonymous July 17, 2004 -- The Port of Houston Authority recently approved a contract commissioning the ArtworkZ Public Art & Design Program of the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH) to create a six tile mosaic murals for the PHA Visitor's Center Pavilion. The imagery depicted in the murals will celebrate, stimulate and document the Port's historical legacy and economic spirit over its 90-year history. MOCAH, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has established partnerships with local youth organizations, local and international artists, the Fifth Ward WorkSource summer job training program and other diverse stakeholders to become active participants in the design, development and creation of the project.
"We have a very open policy when it comes to involving the community in our work. The WorkSource interns will have the opportunity to work alongside professional artists to participate in the creation of a monumental public art project that people will be able to appreciate for generations to come," said Reginald Adams, Executive Director of MOCAH.
The mosaic murals will be comprised of brilliantly colored handmade ceramic tiles depicting six scenes that reflect the history, expansion, innovative technology, cultural tourism, global influence, progress and potential of the Port of Houston. The murals will be produced at MOCAH Studios, located 2500 Summer Street, over the summer 2004 during an intensive public art camp specifically designed for the Fifth Ward WorkSource interns.
Prince Maduekwe, lead artist on the mural project offered his analysis of the impact the murals will have at the Port of Houston. "I think these projects are what will make Houston a truly world class city. The Port is like the engine of the whole enterprise of the city of Houston and to see the story of the Port in such a grand work of art will only add value to visitor’s experience with the Port’s visitor’s center."
The WorkSource interns expressed their excitement about the project and recently sailed on the M/V Sam Houston tour boat to visualize the site for the murals and understand the impact the project will have on the Visitor's Center Pavilion. During the 90-minute tour the interns viewed cargo vessels and operations at the PHA Turning Basin Terminal. All of this will be included in their designs for the mosaic murals.
"Most people don't know the history of the Port, and this will help explain it," said Durrell Porter, a 17-year old senior at Houston's Jefferson Davis High School. "It will help explain how beautiful and what good the Port of Houston does for Houston and across the world."
